The Verde Valley
This high desert region is 90 minutes north of Phoenix and two hours south of the Grand Canyon. It boasts 1,200 square miles of majestic scenery encompassing virtually every type of terrain. It is away from the heat of the lower valley but still well below the harsh winters of the higher country.
Two million years ago, the valley was a land of lush grasslands and marshes, the home of prehistoric land animals and airborne creatures. This beautiful area has become a haven for photographers, outdoors people and nature lovers. The valley is used extensively as a setting for many movies, commercials and television productions.
The valley's friendly people enjoy good recreation year-round. The many communities of the Verde Valley offer shopping and browsing through art galleries and antique shops. The Verde Valley also offers many outdoor recreation opportunities, including swimming, hiking, camping, fishing, jeep tours, horseback riding and ballooning. Those interested in contemporary history will delight in visiting the old ghost town, fort, mining camp and hundreds of Indian ruins throughout the region.
Dead Horse Ranch
Located accross from downtown Cottonwood, on the opposite side of the Verde River, Dead Horse Ranch got its name from the skeleton found there by local children. It's relaxing place for sitting, fishing, picnicking and bird-watching.
Tuzigoot National Monument
About two miles northwest of Cottonwood are the ruins of a 100-room pueblo built by the Sinagua Indian Tribe during the 13th Centruy. The trail walk takes you to a 120-foot high ridge where you will get a commanding view of the Verde Valley.
Jerome
Just up from Clarkdale on the slopes of Cleopatra Hill lies the town of Jerome, which once was a roaring mining camp known for its copper, silver and gold. At one time it had a population of nearly 15,000, but almost overnight became a ghost town. Explore its winding cobblestone streets and stairways for gift shops, eateries, art and mining museums. Be sure to see the complete mining history of Jerome and the Verde Valley which is displayed in the old Douglas Mansion.
Montezuma Castle National Monument
It is not a castle and has nothing to do with the Aztecs, but the early settlers thought there was some connection. It is one of the more impressive of all the prehistoric cliff dwellings in the state of Arizona. The easy self-guided loop trail takes you right to the base of the limestone cliff where the five story structure was built.
Phippen Museum of Western Art
Named for noted Prescott sculptor-painter George Phippen, who helped found Cowboy Artists of America, the museum holds a major annual Western Art Exhibition as well as year-round shows.
Sedona
Sedona is the place to go for breathtaking red rock country. Shopping abounds, ranging from toney art galleries and a Mexican-themed village in the center of town to an outlet mall on the outskirts. When you are through shopping, take one of the many jeep tours available and see the wonderful rock formation spots where passenger cars can't go.
Prescott
Right in the center of town is an old stone couthouse, and across from that is WHISKEY ROW which housed a block full of saloons in the old days. There are festivals going on all the time, Frontier Days features a professional rodeo during July 4th weekend, a July bluegrass festival, Christmas lighting event and parade, and a season of thoroughbred-horse racing.
Prescott National Forest
Surrounding the city, this one-million acre plus woodland area is abundant with picnic sites, lakes, and areas for hiking, fishing, and rock hounding. Favorite spots include Thumb Butte and Granite Mountain, two of the most prominent terrain features in the area. Popular fishing spots are Goldwater and Lynx lakes.
Verde River Canyon Excursion Train
Leaving from Clarkdale, just west of Cottonwood, the four-hour scenic ride traverses the Verde River Canyon. Keep your eyes peeled for cliff dwellings, and bald eagles.
